In honor of Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month this May the NNED has selected three organizations that serve the behavioral health needs of Asian American communities Wisconsin Refugee Assistance Program, Asian Americans for Community Involvement, and Asian Health Coalition of Illinois. These three organizations were selected by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and the NNED to present at a roundtable discussion and presentation on May 25, 2010 at the SAMHSA building in Rockville, Maryland in honor of Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month.

NNED Community of Practice: Join the NNED's 1st Community of Practice (CoP): The Bienvenido Program, a mental health promotion program for Latinos.  CoPs are professional development opportunities for NNED Members to receive training and coaching on a promising practice through a virtual learning platform. NNED’s CDEP Project Seeds “Reducing Disparities Project” in California: The NNED's Community-Defined Evidence Project (CDEP) Learning Cluster provided the conceptual foundation for the California State Department of Mental Health's Reducing Disparities Project that focuses on eliminating disparities in mental health care. "Promising Practices from the Field" Recording Available: A recording of the NNED Forum Call Promising Practices from the Field that took place on April 21st is now available! This webinar featured two promising practices that can be implemented in diverse communities: "Best Practices for Pacific Islander and Native American Indigenous Communities" and "The Bienvenido Program." Underage Drinking Campaign: The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is implementing a new wave of underage drinking prevention public service announcements (PSAs) for print, television, and radio. In patnership with the NNED, SAMHSA has also implemented PSAs directed at the Chinese and American Indian/Alaska Native communities. For more information click here.
 
Health Care Reform Forum: The NNED has been compiling helpful resources on the implementation of health care reform in diverse communities. Health Secretary Addresses Minority Health Issues: HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius has announced that HHS is developing a national plan of action focused on reducing documented health disparities between minority and white populations. For more information click here.
 
Panel Discussion on HIV/AIDS in the Black Community: A panel discussion at the National Association of Black Journalists Conference on Health Disparities, March 5th, featured Greg Millet from the White House Office of Domestic AIDS Policy and Phil Wilson, President and CEO of Black AIDS Institute. HIT Opportunities for Behavioral Health Providers: A new bill in Congress would expand federal health information technology (HIT) opportunities to community behavioral health providers and organizations. For more information click here.
 
Patient Costs Act as a Barrier to Intensive Health Behavior Counseling: A new study found that patients were much more likely to obtain counseling if the counseling service was free, suggesting that out-of-pocket costs are a significant deterrent to use of intensive behavioral counseling services. Stigma Keeps Some Latinos from Depression Treatment: A new study provides evidence that in the Latino community, members who stigmatize mental illness are less likely to seek and comply with mental health treatment. For more information click here.

Funding Opportunities


Expanded HIV: The purpose of this program is to increase HIV testing opportunities for populations disproporitionately affected by HIV. Applications are due June 3, 2010.

Reducing Health Disparities Among Minority and Underserved Children: This funding opportunity seeks applications from institutions/organizations that propose to conduct research to reduce health disparities among minority and underserved children. Applications are due June 5, 2010.

Community Participation in Research: This funding announcement solicits grant applications that propose intervention research on health promotion, disease prevention, and health disparities that communities and researchers jointly conduct. Applications are due June 5, 2010.
 
Grants to Support the Hispanic Health Services Research Grant Program: This announcement seeks competitive applications for small applied research projects that relate to identifying and evaluating solutions for eliminating disparities among Hispanic Americans. Applications are due June 24, 2010.
 
Promise Neighborhoods: This program is intended to significantly improve the educational and developmental outcomes of all children in our most distressed communities, including rural and tribal communities. Applications are due June 25, 2010.

Suicide Prevention Guide for AI/AN Communities: SAMHSA has released a suicide prevention planning guide to prevent suicide in American Indian/Alaskan Native (AI/AN) communities. The guide was designed to support AI/AN communities and those who serve them in developing effective, comprehensive, and culturally appropriate suicide prevention plans.
